De checklist literatuur onderzoek is opgesteld als hand-out bij een scriptiehandleiding bij Europese Studies als hulpmiddel voor het schrijven van kwalitatief goede scriptievoorstellen. Het kan studenten helpen zicht te krijgen op verschillende informatiebehoeften die kunnen ontstaan bij het doen van onderzoek. De checklist doet suggesties voor verschillende typen literatuuronderzoek en geeft tips voor het uitvoeren ervan. Deze checklist kan aangepast worden naar vakgebied en de bijzonderheden die van belang zijn voor de betreffende wetenschappelijke discipline.

Questions to ask yourself on literature research for your thesis feasibility study

  • Are my research question and sub-questions well formulated?
  • For which sub-questions do I need to find literature?
  1. Search terms
  • What keywords can I think of that are associated with each question? (jargon, language, spelling varieties)
  • Did I use question nouns to formulate different type of keywords? (who, when, where, what etc.)

  • What primary source material do I want to use for my research or am I going to create data myself?
  • Do I know what methodology I’m going to apply and am I capable of doing this in a scientific manner?
  • Where can I find this material? Online, at the University, elsewhere?
  • Can I access this material? Online or physically

 

  1. General theories
  • Do I need introductory literature to fully understand the theoretical context of my research?
  • Can I find any relevant literature in the handbooks and encyclopedias in the Database Selector?
  • Did I review the suggested publications in the bibliographies of these texts?
  • Do these texts provide other relevant keywords?

 

  1. Secondary literature
  • How, or based on what literature, do I determine the state of research on my subject?
  • Which type of database would be suitable for this?
  • Can I explain my choice of databases from the database selector?

  • How many results do my keywords yield and are they relevant?
  • Can I combine my search terms or use wild cards to get more relevant results?

  • Have I assessed the authority or the scientific quality of the selected publications?
